The real cost of a social media stack in 2026

We priced five channels across 15 social tools. The same job runs $228 or $1,188 a year, and paying monthly costs 19% more on average. The full spread.

The real cost of a social media stack in 2026

We priced the same unremarkable job — one person scheduling posts to five social channels — across all 15 social media tools in our dataset. The cheapest way to do it costs $228 a year. The most expensive costs $1,188. Nothing about the output differs: the same posts go to the same five places on the same days.

That $960 gap is not a feature gap. It is a billing-model gap, and it is the single most consequential thing to understand before you subscribe to anything in this category.

All pricing below comes from each platform’s listed plans on annual billing; verify current pricing on the vendor’s site before you commit.

The headline: five channels, one person

ToolEntry planPer monthPer yearWhat the plan covers
LaterStarter$19$2281 social set, 1 user
PublerProfessional$20$240$4 per account × 5
MetricoolStarter$20$240Up to 5 brands
HypefuryStarter$21$2526 accounts
SocialBeeBootstrap$24$2885 profiles, 1 user
BufferEssentials$25$300$5 per channel × 5
SendibleCreator$25$3006 profiles, 1 user
IconosquareLaunch$36$4321 user, 100 posts/mo
LoomlyStarter$49$58812 accounts, 3 users
Vista SocialProfessional$63$7563 users
Sprout SocialEssentials$79$948Per seat
HootsuiteStandard$99$1,18810 accounts, 1 user

5.2x separates the top and bottom of that table. The median is $300 a year.

Three billing models, and only one of them scales cheaply

Every tool here picks one of three ways to charge you, and the choice determines whether growth is affordable.

Per channel. Buffer at $5/channel/mo and Publer at $4/account/mo. Cheapest at small counts, perfectly linear afterwards. Five channels is $25 and $20; twenty channels is $100 and $80.

Per seat. Sprout Social at $79/seat/mo and Hootsuite at $99/user/mo on Standard. Brutal for teams — a three-person Sprout Social account is $237/mo, or $2,844/yr, before anyone has posted anything.

Flat by tier. SocialBee, Sendible, Loomly, Metricool. You buy a bucket of profiles and seats and pay one price until you outgrow it. Slightly worse than per-channel at very small counts, much better once a team is involved: Loomly’s $49/mo Starter includes three users, which Sprout Social would charge $237/mo for.

The practical rule that falls out of this: per-channel pricing wins for solo operators, flat-tier pricing wins for teams, and per-seat pricing rarely wins at all below agency scale.

The Buffer–Hootsuite crossover is further away than you think

Hootsuite’s pitch is that its price covers ten accounts, so heavy users come out ahead. The arithmetic disagrees.

ChannelsBuffer EssentialsHootsuiteCheaper
5$25/mo$99/mo (Standard)Buffer, by $888/yr
10$50/mo$99/mo (Standard)Buffer, by $588/yr
25$125/mo$249/mo (Advanced)Buffer, by $1,488/yr
49$245/mo$249/mo (Advanced)Buffer, just
50$250/mo$249/mo (Advanced)Hootsuite, at last

Hootsuite Standard covers ten accounts for $99/mo; Buffer covers the same ten for $50. Above ten accounts Hootsuite moves you to Advanced at $249/mo annual with unlimited accounts — and Buffer’s per-channel maths does not overtake that until 50 channels.

If you run fewer than fifty social accounts, Hootsuite is not cheaper at any point on the curve. That is the finding behind best Hootsuite alternatives on a budget, and this is the arithmetic underneath it.

The one caveat worth stating plainly: Buffer Essentials bills per channel per user, so a team changes the answer. Buffer Team at $10/channel/mo includes unlimited users, and against Hootsuite Advanced that crossover arrives at 25 channels instead of 50.

The annual-billing tax

Across all 15 tools, paying monthly instead of annually costs 18.7% more on average, with a median of exactly 20%.

  • Biggest discount: Iconosquare, 33.3% off ($54/mo monthly → $36/mo annual).
  • Runner-up: Hypefury, 27.6% off ($29 → $21).
  • No discount at all: Hootsuite Standard ($99 either way) and Typefully Starter ($8 either way) — the only two entry plans in the category where committing for a year buys you nothing.

There is a quiet irony in Hootsuite’s numbers. Its Standard tier offers no annual discount whatsoever, while its Advanced tier has the steepest discount in the entire category — 37.6%, from $399/mo down to $249/mo. The discount is reserved for the plan that already costs the most.

Practical takeaway: on a $25/mo tool the annual commitment saves around $60 a year, which is not worth locking yourself in for. On a $99/mo tool it is worth checking whether a discount exists at all — because at Hootsuite Standard, it does not.

Free tiers: six of fifteen

Six of the 15 tools have a genuine free plan, and the caps cluster tightly around three channels:

ToolFree plan cap
Buffer3 channels, 10 posts each
Publer3 accounts
Metricool1 brand, 20 posts/mo
Typefully1 account, limited
Iconosquare2 profiles
Manychat25 contacts

Three channels is the shape of a free social plan in 2026, and for a solo creator posting to X, LinkedIn and Instagram that is often the entire requirement. The honest advice for anyone starting out is to run Buffer or Publer free until a fourth channel genuinely matters, then pay $4–$5 for it.

Method, and what we excluded

Prices are each vendor’s listed entry tier on annual billing, taken from our tools dataset and quoted as monthly-equivalent. The five-channel scenario assumes one user and no add-ons; where a plan bundles more than five profiles we used the plan price as-is rather than pro-rating it, which flatters the flat-tier tools slightly.

Two of the 15 are not schedulers and are excluded from the five-channel comparison: Brand24 is social listening at $199/mo annual, and Manychat is chat automation priced by contacts. They are counted in the annual-discount and free-tier figures because those are category-wide.

One data caveat we would rather state than hide: “channel”, “account”, “profile”, “brand” and “social set” do not mean the same thing at every vendor, and Later’s $228/yr figure rests on one social set covering the five networks. If that assumption breaks for your specific mix, Publer and Metricool at $240/yr are the safer cheapest-in-class picks.

What we would actually buy

  • Solo, three channels or fewerBuffer or Publer free. $0.
  • Solo, five or more channelsPubler at $4/account/mo, or Metricool at $20/mo if the analytics matter.
  • Small teamLoomly at $49/mo annual for 12 accounts and 3 users, or SocialBee at $24/mo if one person posts.
  • Agency with client reportingSendible or Vista Social, where white-label is the feature you are paying for.
  • Almost nobody → per-seat enterprise pricing, unless the analytics and social inbox are doing work no cheaper tool does.
